Connect WordPress
On this page
You need: a self-hosted WordPress site (version 5.6 or later) where you're an Admin, or a WordPress.com account that can publish on your site.
Robopost connects both kinds of WordPress site, with a different card for each:
| Your site | Card | How you sign in |
|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted (WordPress.org software on your own hosting) | WordPress self-hosted | Username and an application password |
| Hosted on WordPress.com | WordPress.com | Your WordPress.com account |
Want new blog articles shared to your social channels automatically instead? That's an automation: WordPress and Ghost.
Connect a self-hosted WordPress site
Your site must run WordPress 5.6 or later, and you must sign in as an Admin user. If you're not an Admin, ask one to help.
1. Create an application password in WordPress
- Log in to your WordPress admin and go to Users → Profile.
- Scroll down to Application Passwords.
- Under New Application Password Name, type a name you'll recognize, then click Add New Application Password.
- WordPress shows the new password once. Copy it and keep it somewhere safe.
2. Connect the site in Robopost
- Go to Channels → Connect channel and click WordPress self-hosted.
- In the Connect WordPress hosted Site window, fill in:
- Site URL: your site's full address, such as
https://www.example.com. - Username: the WordPress username you log in with. Not the name you gave the application password.
- Password: the application password from part 1.
- Site URL: your site's full address, such as
- Click Connect.
Robopost signs in to your site and creates and deletes a test draft to make sure it can publish. When that works you'll see "Successfully connected", and the site is listed in Channels → Channels.
"Connect error. Please verify your login credentials."
Robopost couldn't sign in, or couldn't create a draft. Check these, then try again:
- The application password is pasted completely, without spaces added at the start or end.
- Username is your login username, and that user is an Admin.
- Site URL is the address of your site, starting with
https://. - Under Plugins, the separate Application Passwords plugin is not installed. WordPress 5.6 and later has application passwords built in; if the plugin is there, delete it and create a new application password.
- A security plugin, firewall or host setting isn't blocking the WordPress REST API or application passwords.
Edit your WordPress posts and pages from Robopost
For a self-hosted site, Robopost can open the posts and pages already on your site:
- Go to Channels → Channels, click the ⋮ menu on the site's card, then WordPress Dashboard.
- Pick the Posts or Pages tab and click an item.
- Edit it and click Update. From the same screen you can see or preview it on your site, or delete it.
Connect a WordPress.com site
- Go to Channels → Connect channel and click WordPress.com.
- WordPress.com opens. Sign in and approve access for Robopost.
- Robopost opens Connect Wordpress.com with your sites. Turn on each site you want.
- Click Connect.
"Successfully connected" appears, and each site is listed in Channels → Channels.
If the list shows "We could not find any data.", the WordPress.com account you signed in with has no sites. Sign out of WordPress.com and connect again with the right account.
Daily limits
A self-hosted site can publish up to 1,000 posts a day through Robopost; a WordPress.com site up to 10. See Posting limits.
Reconnect a WordPress site
If you revoke the application password, or the channel shows Reconnect Required, create a new application password, open the channel's Settings, click Refresh Channel Connection and enter it. The Site URL can't be changed there. See Reconnect a channel.
