# Short links

A short link is a compact address that forwards to your long URL and counts every click. Create one while
you write a post, then watch its clicks under **Short URLs**.

**You need:** a post open in the [composer](https://dash.robopost.app/docs/posts/create-a-post.md).

## Shorten a link

1. In the composer, click **Shorten URL** (the link button) under the text box.
2. Paste your long link in **URL to shorten** and click **Shorten**.
3. Under **Your short URL is:**, click **Copy to clipboard**.
4. Paste the short link in your post text. Click **Shorten another** for the next link, or **Close** the dialog.

## See how many people clicked

1. In the sidebar, click **Content → Short URLs** ([Short URLs](https://dash.robopost.app/shorturls)). Every short link you created is
listed with the title and description of the page it points to.
2. Use **Copy URL** to copy a link again, or **View Details** to open it.

The details page shows:

- **Short URL** and **Original URL**
- **Link Title**, **Link Description** and **Link Image**, taken from the original page
- **All-Time Click Count** and **All-Time Unique Click Count**
- **Short URL Statistics**: charts of **Clicks Statistics** and **Unique Clicks Statistics**. Pick a period
with the from and to dates.

## Change where a short link points

On the details page, click **Edit URL**. Change the **Original URL** (and the **HTML Title** if you want),
then click **Update**. The short link now forwards to the new address, including in posts already
published.

## Delete a short link

On the [Short URLs](https://dash.robopost.app/shorturls) page, choose **Delete** on the link and confirm with **Yes**.

To clean up automatically, open [Team](https://dash.robopost.app/team), expand **Data retention settings** and turn on
**Auto cleanup short URLs after post deletion**. When you delete a post, its short links are deleted too,
unless another post still uses them.

## Use short links with UTM parameters

UTM parameters set in the composer's **Advanced settings**, or in a channel's default UTM settings, are added
to every link in the post text when it publishes, short links included. To make sure the tags reach your
website, add them to the long URL before you shorten it, for example
`https://example.com/sale?utm_source=newsletter&utm_campaign=spring`. See
[Create a post](https://dash.robopost.app/docs/posts/create-a-post.md#add-utm-parameters).

## Use your own domain for short links

On the Pro and Agency plans (lifetime deals included), short links can use a domain of yours, such as
`go.example.com`.

1. At your domain provider, create a **CNAME** record for the subdomain you want, pointing to `rpst.cc`.
2. In Robopost, open [Team](https://dash.robopost.app/team) and expand **Short URL Settings**.
3. Click **Setup short URL domain**.
4. In **Request Short URL Domain**, enter the subdomain (for example `go.example.com`) and click **Confirm**.

Robopost checks the CNAME record first. If it can't find it, you see a message that it couldn't verify your
short URL domain: DNS changes can take a few hours to spread, so wait and try again. Once the request is
accepted, **Short URL Settings** shows **Short URL domain name requested. Please allow 24H to take effect.**
When the domain is active, it's listed as **Your Short URL Domain**.

> **Note:** Use a subdomain you don't use for anything else. All short links created after the domain is
> active use it.
